In October, the entire Freedom Treks team hopped on a plane and jumped on bikes in beautiful sunshine to experience the Lake Constance tour, one of our best-selling cycling holidays.
This easy six or seven night self-guided itinerary takes you around the spectacular shores of one of Europe’s largest lakes passing through Germany, Switzerland and Austria on an easy to follow and mostly car free cycle path. Direct trains from Zurich airport to Constance in Germany, the start and end point of the tour, makes travelling there easy. The team have shared their top tips and best moments of this fantastic hotel and cycle holiday, which is perfect for beginner cyclists and regular cyclists alike.
Picking up your bikes
“I would highly recommend going to the depot to pick up your bike rather than having it delivered to your accommodation in case you need to make any adjustments or if you are a novice and need advice on how to attach or remove the panniers or handlebar bag. The depot is open until 7pm every day but it is really easy to pick up the bikes the following morning as it is so close to the start of the cycle route. Plus, they have a fridge full of refreshing, cold drinks for you to help yourself to! ” - Catherine Gray, Head of Freedom Treks
Stunning Views Constance to Stein am Rhein
“Heading to Stein am Rhein from Constance was the most memorable part of the trip for me. It was beautiful and so peaceful, hugging the south side of the lake and passing through rolling corn fields, chocolate box villages and vineyards. Absolutely stunning, this medieval town is a real treat with charming restaurants and bars tucked away in little alleyways.” – Vicky Bamford, Freedom Treks Marketing Co-ordinator
Spectacular Falls - The Rheinfall
“I would definitely recommend extending the tour by one night to include the Rheinfall, the largest waterfall in Central Europe, which is spectacular and you really can get as close to the water as you wish. You can even take an exhilarating boat ride which allows you to disembark on the Rhine rock, which is situated in the middle of the falls, giving you the best view. It really is a beautiful route and this was the highlight of the trip for me!” - Rachael Wilson
Pack a Picnic
“Weather permitting, I definitely recommend packing a picnic. Clearings alongside the lake and river and amidst the cornfields provide the perfect spot to take a well-earned al fresco refreshment stop. Our picnic of local cheeses, hams, bread and pretzels in a pretty clearing set up with stone table and seating felt like a banquet. If you prefer the warmth and comfort of being indoors, or relaxing on the terrace of a local café, the route takes you through various towns and villages for timely coffee, cake, lunch and beer stops.” - Sarah Dean
