Walk the route of the mighty River Rhine, which cuts a deep, steep-sided valley through the German countryside where vineyards line the hillsides and grand castles overlook the historic towns. This walk takes you through the Rheingau and Middle Rhine regions, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It largely follows the Rheinsteig walking path which has been nominated as Germany’s most beautiful hiking route. Setting off from Rudesheim, you’ll walk to the north, heading downstream through the valley and up and over the surrounding hills. The view from the Lorelei rock which has inspired songs and folk tales is a particular highlight, as are the numerous castles guarding the valley which make this a scenic and fascinating tour.

The walking is rated as moderate with days of up to 13 miles. With some short and steep up and downhill sections, the tour requires a good level of fitness and some walking experience. The paths follow established wine grower’s trails and bridleways. A glass of the local Riesling in one of the many ‘Straussenwirtschaften’ wine taverns is a well-earned reward after a good day of walking.

What is a 'Moderate' walking holiday?

Moderate walking holidays will follow paths or trails with some rocky terrain or loose surfaces. Some surefootedness is required, as well as an occasional head for heights. Most days will see you walking for between 4 and 6.5 hours. You can expect some steep up and down hill sections, possibly including some mountain ridges or summits, so good walking fitness is required and some hiking experience is highly recommended.
