This fascinating tour through Japan's Kansai region starts and finishes in the country's cultural centre, Kyoto. Visit traditional cities steeped in history, then cycle through the lush green hills and tea plantations in the rural areas beyond the city limits. After a day riding through narrow backstreets seeing the temples of Kyoto, you’ll then spend time on the shores of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake. Visit ancient Nara with its Giant Buddha and free-roaming deer, then return to Kyoto stopping at Uji to take part in an authentic tea ceremony.
This is an unforgettable ride that will give you a great insight into in Japan’s history and unique culture. You will ride on dedicated cycle paths and quiet secondary roads with some hilly sections. A local guide will lead, with a support van that follows with drinks and for breaks from cycling, if needed. The traditional accommodation is a highlight of this tour, staying in ryokan inns and guest houses, often with onsen hot springs. Indulge in the flavours and variety of Japanese food, sampling local specialities and ingredients with a sushi-making class and sake tasting.
This tour is an excellent choice for Spring and Autumn. Consider travelling in April, which will give you a chance to see the sakura cherry blossoms which Japan is so famous for.
