Experience the rugged and mountainous splendour of Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s main islands. You'll cycle via a series of suspension bridges linking the smaller islands of the Seto Inland Sea on the famous ‘Shimanami Kaido’ cycling route, then explore Shikoku's lush forests, secluded temples and wild Pacific coast.

Setting out from Onomichi, the first two days of this guided tour follow a route along quiet roads and dedicated cycle lanes. After reaching the historic onsen town of Matsuyama, cut inland through the hills on undulating roads in a region few Western tourists see, visiting artisan workshops and temples on the famous Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage route. Once you reach the southern Pacific coast, continue via Susaki to Kochi where the tour finishes with a grand final meal and a glass of sake to toast an unforgettable ride.

The cycling on this guided tour is rated as Moderate with some longer days and climbs, though with e-bikes available, it is suitable for most cyclists with some experience and a base fitness level. The first few days are on a dedicated cycle route, and then on quiet countryside roads with little traffic. A support van is on hand at all times, carrying cold drinks and snacks. The accommodation is a real highlight, with a mix of modern boutique hotels and traditional Ryokan inns, most with onsen baths. Most meals are included, allowing you to sample the best cuisine Japan has to offer. Your guides will also be on hand to assist with ordering and selecting the local specialities.

Ask us about the optional two-night extensions in Hiroshima before the tour or in Kyoto after the tour to extend your time in Japan.
