Cycle the length of Portugal’s west coast, from its second-largest city to its historic capital, on our Porto to Lisbon Extended Bike Tour. From dramatic cliffs and vast sandy beaches to charming fishing villages and laidback surf towns, you’ll see many beautiful sights as you follow the winding coastal trails.
Starting in Porto, make sure you arrive in enough time to visit the iconic Luís I Bridge, the Livraria Lello bookstore, and the Torre dos Clérigos which delivers the best views across the city and the blue waters of the Duoro River. Sample local specialities like Francesinha and codfish and tour one of the famous Port Cellars (tastings recommended!)
Once on your bike, you’ll then cycle the first five days of our 7-night Porto to Lisbon Bike Tour, which includes riding past the calm waters of the Aveiro Lagoon, bird-watching at the tranquil São Jacinto Dunes Natural Reserve and a stopover in the historic city of Figueira da Foz. From here, you’ll continue on down the coast with four additional days of more challenging cycling with some steeper ascents.
The views are worth the effort as you ride beside rolling dunes, along clifftops that overlook sleepy bays, and through several pretty towns and villages. These include Nazaré, loved by surfers for its massive waves, and the idyllic walled town of Obidos, with its white-washed houses and impressive castle.
Your final tour stop is Lisbon, a diverse European capital, where the old blends perfectly with the new. This historic city has plenty of attractions and entertainment along the Tagus River. Wander along the waterfront at sunset, stopping off for a sundowner or two as you look back on your tour. Or if you are further inland, look out for one of the ‘miradouros’ viewpoints to enjoy a stunning panorama of the city at this golden hour.
If you think the second half of this tour might be too much of a challenge, we recommend the 7-night Porto to Lisbon Bike Tour where you take a transfer on Day 6 from Figueira da Foz to Sintra (included in tour price), avoiding the harder days in the saddle.
